What is it?
Cerebrospinal fluid is present around the brain. It may leak through a defect between the cranial cavity(brain cavity) and the nasal cavity. Repair of this defect can be done through the nasal cavity through endoscopy
What is the aim of the procedure?
Surgery helps to prevent further CSF leak thereby reducing intracranial complications including meningitis.
What is done during the procedure?
The procedure is done under endoscopic vision. The nasal cavity is examined to identify the site of leak. The region of the leak is then sealed by performing a multilayer closure. The materials needed for this closure may be harvested from your thigh or from abdomen.
The procedure will be carried out under general anaesthesia. If you have any concerns on the risks of anaesthesia , please discuss with anaesthetist prior to surgery.
What are the risks associated with the procedure?
Infection can occur, requiring antibiotics and further treatment. Meningitis is infection of the coverings of the brain.
Headache can occur.
Bleeding can occur.
Loss of smell can occur.
Recurrence can occur which may require further surgery.
Post-operative care and follow-up:
You will have sutures and dressing in the leg or abdomen based on the area where the graft is harvested.
You will have urine tube connected which will be removed two days post surgery
For few people special medicine may be started to prevent formation of clots in the legs
Nasal pack will be placed following the procedure. You will require a minimum of 3 days bed rest. You should avoid straining, forceful blowing of nose, bending down, straining during passing stools, and coughing.
The nasal pack will be removed subsequently. You will be discharged if no complications are found. You are required to avoid exerting yourself for atleast 1month following surgery. You will be required to follow-up with your doctor every 3 months for atleast 1year. Based on the cause for the leak, you will be prescribed medications for variable duration.
